China approves vaccine for military use only

Lusa

China today approved a vaccine against the new coronavirus, for internal use in the People’s Liberation Army, the country’s armed forces, after positive results in clinical trials.

The vaccine was created by the Military Scientific Institute and the Chinese biopharmaceutical company CanSino Biologics, according to a statement from this firm, which is based in the port city of Tianjin, northeast China.

The new vaccine uses the molecular cloning of covid-19, a genetic engineering technique also known as recombinant DNA, and was approved for “exclusive use by the Chinese military” on June 25 by the Central Military Commission, according to local media.

Approval is valid for one year.

The CanSino vaccine has gone through phases one and two of tests, which indicated that it has “the potential to prevent diseases caused by Sars-Cov-2”, the virus that causes covid-19, CanSino said in a statement.

Almost 150 vaccines for covid-19 are being developed by scientists around the world. Seven vaccine candidates developed by Chinese companies are undergoing clinical trials in China.

China approves vaccine against Covid-19 exclusively for military use – Executive Digest

China’s armed forces on Monday approved a vaccine against the new coronavirus, only for internal use, developed by its research unit, in conjunction with a biotechnology company, advances The Guardian.

More than half of the 17 vaccine candidates identified by the World Health Organization (WHO), which are undergoing clinical evaluation, involve Chinese companies or health institutes.

Hong Kong-based CanSino Biologics said in a statement to the stock exchange that clinical trial data showed that the Chinese military vaccine had a “good safety profile” with strong potential to prevent diseases caused by the new coronavirus .

The company also revealed that China’s central military commission approved the use of the vaccine on 25 June for a period of one year.

The vaccine was developed by CanSino, in conjunction with the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology, part of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. Its use cannot be extended without new approvals, according to the company.

The extent of its use in China’s military forces remains unknown, and the Ministry of Defense has not responded to a request for comment from the France Press Agency (AFP) for more information.

CanSino added that it cannot guarantee that the vaccine, whose phase 1 trials have already been carried out, will be marketed. Another 131 candidate vaccines identified by WHO are currently in the pre-clinical phase.

According to the medical magazine ‘The Lancet’, more than a thousand clinical trials have been carried out on dozens of pharmaceutical treatments against the virus, but so far, no fully effective medical intervention has been found.

Natuna Heats Up Again, Bakamla Can Buy Military Weapons

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Member of Commission I DPR Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi revealed that the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) will be allowed to buy military weapons starting in June this year. According to him, it will strengthen supervision over Indonesian waters especially around Natuna, which is close to South China Sea.

Bobby supports the government’s move to allow Bakamla to buy military weapons. He considered that so far Indonesia still tends to be weak in monitoring the Natuna waters near the South China Sea.

“So far it only has the carrying capacity of a light rifle with a range of under 1 km, which of course with the dynamics of the North Natuna Sea, is inadequate,” Bobby said when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Sunday (28/6).

Bobby explained that Bakamla only had about 10 patrol ships. However, not yet equipped with standard military weapons (Naval Gun System).

This situation, according to Bobby, makes Indonesia tend to be weak when compared to China, which so far has often provoked in the South China Sea. Bobby said the Chinese coast guard was equipped with Norinco with a range of more than 5 km.

When Bakamla was allowed to buy military weapons, Bobby saw Indonesia’s marine security posture would become stronger. Therefore he supports.

“With Permenhan 12 number 2020, it strongly supports the supremacy of our civilian sea security there. Now Bakamla can shoot foreign fishermen who enter Indonesian territory without permission, and will not be considered military aggression,” Bobby said.

House of Representatives Commission I member Dave Laksono expressed similar things. He supports if Bakamla is allowed to buy weapons. Moreover, so far Bakamla ships are not equipped with weapons in protecting the waters.

However, it is not a military weapon for war, but a defense or surveillance of the waters.

“Not the big artillery, but to defend themselves. If for the war, it is to massively damage, but if to defend yourself it is to guard,” Dave said.

Dave also considered Bakamla must be strengthened by a law. It is known, the formation of Bakamla is based on Presidential Regulation No. 178 of 2014. Dave believes Bakamla will be stronger if it is regulated in a law rather than a Presidential Regulation.

Known, China has provoked in the South China Sea since a few weeks ago. They still claim it is the territorial waters.

The Chinese signs provoked the reaction of the United States which also showed strength around the South China Sea. The Indonesian side, in this case the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, still stated expressly not to recognize China’s claim on waters in the South China Sea.

The Ministry of Defense wants a Rail Baltica branch to the Ādaži military base

Will the grand railway project “Rail Baltica” have a branch to the Ādaži military base as well? The Ministry of Defense believes that this major project should also be aligned with military needs. Those responsible for the implementation of the project should not rush to express their name yet.

The Ministry of Defense intends that in the Rail Baltica project a railway branch to the Ādaži military base could be built. The latest draft of the National Defense Concept notes that Latvia is responsible for receiving Allied forces both in peacetime and in crisis. To ensure rapid movement, infrastructure must also be adapted to military needs. This would also apply to emerging infrastructure, such as the grandiose railway project Rail Baltica, which aims to connect the Baltic States with Central Europe.

The Ministry of Defense intends that a branch to Ādaži could be built on this line.

“Currently, the closest place to Ādaži base for loading and unloading military equipment from railway wagons is Garkalne railway station, which is located about ten kilometers from the base,” says Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (“Development / About!”).

Moving armored vehicles by truck at this stage requires both logistics planning and money. A railway branch near the Ādaži base would significantly facilitate this.

The Minister of Defense emphasizes that mobility has historically been one of the important factors in the defense sector, and that transport infrastructure must also be adapted to military needs.

“The days 15-20 years ago, when it seemed that the railway would no longer be needed, are over. The railway had and will have a role in defense and strategic planning, ”emphasizes Pabriks.

The Minister reminded that this month the British brought a lot of armor equipment from Estonia to study in Ādaži. Drove on the road, traffic jammed, traffic jams. The railway would solve it.

“For example, the transfer of US troops from Germany to Poland for Trump”… If Rail Baltica were on the ground, it would be strategically advantageous. They could go from Poland to study in Ādaži or just come, ”says Pabriks.

The Ministry of Defense has already consulted with the Baltic joint venture RB Rail, which is responsible for the project, on its wish. The company’s representatives inform that the design of the Rail Baltica main route in the section from Vangaži to the Latvian / Estonian border was started in April.

Within the framework of this agreement, a stopping point will be provided at the conceptual level for the needs of the Ādaži military base, with the possibility to develop a wider connection as well.

Nothing is promised yet. It is planned to continue discussions on the location, length, costs of the possible branch and whether they could be partially financed from the European Union funds.

Military strikes hot spots as daily viral infections reach three-month high

Victoria has registered 244 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 13 days, compared to only 68 in the first half of June.

Victoria’s vice president of health, Dr. Annaliese van Diemen, admitted the growing numbers were “ not where we want to be ”, but reported further increases due to the test blitz door-to-door, which will aim to test 10,000 people per day. On Friday, around 22,000 Victorians were tested.

“Our goal for the next two weeks is to really find each case and then get to a point where these cases peak and start to drop,” said Dr. van Diemen.

She said that almost all of the cases registered in the past 24 hours came from known virus outbreaks in the northern and western suburbs. There has been no notable increase in cases in other parts of Melbourne.

Alerts were sent to residents of Keilor Downs and Broadmeadows yesterday advising them to participate in the state’s door-to-door test blitz.

A total of 60 defense personnel were in the field yesterday in various positions and their number is expected to increase in the coming days.

Dr. van Diemen championed the return traveler test in quarantine hotels in Victoria after it emerged that the government was seeking legal advice to make the test mandatory.

On Friday, it revealed that around 30% of returning travelers had refused to be tested for COVID-19, which means that up to 5,400 of the 18,000 travelers had returned to the community without being tested.

“We don’t see any cases in our community that … have fled the quarantine hotel because they haven’t been tested, we just don’t see them,” she said.

“ Where we see cases is in these suburbs where we blitz, in these hotspot suburbs. ”

Victorian Leader of the Opposition Michael O’Brien has said that any return traveler who refuses an exam should pay their own hotel costs.

“I think it will resolve this fairly quickly,” he said.

Yesterday, two new pop-up test sites opened in Fawkner and Pakenham, bringing the number in Melbourne to 13 as part of the hotspot test blitz.

New cases from yesterday included eight outbreak-related cases and one traveler who was quarantined at the hotel.

A third staff member from a Coles distribution center in Laverton tested positive, after all workers were tested this week. Another case, a close contact of a worker, was detected in the cluster of the Stamford Plaza hotel, bringing the total to 18.

This is due to the fact that public transportation data shows that the number of people on buses almost doubled in some Victorian areas in June, while train use in hot spot board areas increased by 40%. .

Transport data disseminated to Age showed that the number of users increased from week to week in the first half of June, despite Prime Minister Daniel Andrews’ edict to work from home if possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

In the Casey hotspot, the number of trains increased by 40% during the week of June 10. Bus travelers increased 92% in Nillumbik and 63% in Cardinia, another hotspot.

The new Minister of Public Transport, Ben Carroll, said that the government had intensified the cleaning and did not plan to limit the number of trains, trams or buses, as this would create congestion in other areas such as than platforms or tram stops.

Georgina and Chantelle Daher were among hundreds of people who were tested on Saturday at Fawkner’s new site at CB Smith Reserve.

The volume of swabs collected during the Melbourne blitz meant that they could expect to wait three to five days for their results instead of the usual 24 to 48 hours.

The mother-daughter pair, who is part of the larger Lebanese community in Melbourne, had isolated herself at home and said “100% yes” that everyone in Fawkner should be tested, that he may or may not have symptoms.

“If you saw this guy say” yeah, I’m still hugging my family. “We don’t all do that,” said Chantelle. “We all isolate and do the right thing.”

Both were nervous about the intrusive nature of the “deep nasal” and throat swab tests.

“My palms were so sweaty on the way,” said Chantelle. “You hear so many different things about it, but it was good, just a little uncomfortable.”

About 2,500 people are under quarantine in Victorian hotels. Dr. van Diemen said that returning travelers were asked to be tested on days 3 and 11, the latter testing to see if they were COVID-19 free before leaving the hotel.

Infectious disease expert Professor Mary-Louise McLaws said return travelers who refuse to take the first test increase the risk of spreading the virus. But the 14-day quarantine period was double the average incubation period.
