(Chuncheon = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Hae-yong = On the 1st of the 8th day of the strike of the Cargo Headquarters Solidarity Confederation of Trade Unions of Korea, the Public Transport Workers Union, Gangwon-do held a meeting of the Disaster Countermeasures and Security Headquarters under the presidency of Governor Kim Jin-tae to check measures for all sectors.

The province decided to consider suspending construction on public and private construction sites as cement shipments had dropped to 69% of the normal level due to this strike and the operation of ready-mixed concrete companies was almost ‘completely’ implemented.

Accordingly, if the strike is prolonged, it seems inevitable that the planned completion schedule of the construction site by the end of this month will be disrupted.

The provincial government stopped construction on seven sites ordered by public institutions, including the Hwacheon Local Road 460 Steep Slope Risk Maintenance Project, as ready-mix concrete factories were shut down as cement stocks ran out.

To make matters worse, if the railway union even goes on strike from the 2nd, it is expected that there will be major disruption to cargo and passenger transport in the state.

If the rail union goes on strike, the amount of cement transported per day, which is currently around 9,000 tonnes, will drop sharply to around 2,000 tonnes, and the number of trains will also be reduced, causing inconvenience to passengers.

However, at the moment the transportation and storage functions of the three gas stations in the province are operating normally, and none of the 628 gas stations have exhausted their inventory.

Donghae Port’s transport trucks are not unionized, so they are not affected by the strike.

Gangwon-do opined that the five Korean beef feed companies in the province had no problems with feed supply either.

Governor Kim Jin-tae said, “We will carefully check the current status of the damage caused by refusing transportation in order to minimize inconvenience and damage to residents, focus administrative power on solving logistics difficulties, and respond strictly to illegal acts with the principle of zero tolerance and no compromise.”
