Last week the fine dust was transported along Nepessing Street, in the center of Lapeer, while several workers used saws, sanders and sledge hammers to cut the concrete to remove the bases from which the lampposts, nicknamed “cobras” due to the curve and in the shape of the top of the lights stood along the way. The light poles were removed in a joint venture between the city of Lapeer and the Lapeer Downtown Development Authority to reduce the costs of electricity bills, but above all to beautify the city’s central business district. Before their removal, cobra lights towered over vintage-looking black street lamps in the central business district, diminishing the effect of vintage lights due to the two light sources. The black street lights will have a new LED dome.
