(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Seong-heum Cho = The Russian House of Representatives (State Duma) has unanimously ratified an agreement on the annexation of four occupied territories in Ukraine, Reuters and Sputnik news agency reported on the 3rd (local time) .

“Now there are 89 federal entities in the Russian Federation,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Telegram.

When the bill was passed, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov congratulated the representatives of Ukraine’s four occupied territories: Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk (Ukrainian name Luhansk) and Zaporiza, while saying he was confident that Parliament would also approve the bill and it was said.

As a result, the annexation agreement signed by President Vladimir Putin on the 30th of last month with these occupied territories is only to be ratified by Parliament and finally signed by the president.

The Senedd, which intends to review the agreement on the 4th, is also certain to ratify it.

President Putin signed an annexation agreement with the occupied territories in the Kremlin on the 30th of the same month after the territorial termination of these occupied territories was decided by referendum on the 23rd and 27th of last month.

Since then, legal procedures such as the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of the agreement have continued one after the other.

However, Ukraine has not recognized the annexation and has continued its territorial offensive. President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement released the day before that he had liberated two Russian villages in Kherson Oblast and was initiating the restoration of occupied areas in Luhansk.

The West has also condemned the annexation as a breach of international law and is pushing for arms aid to Ukraine and additional sanctions against Russia.
