Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continued its activities last night (Saturday, June 27, 2020), staging UFC on ESPN 12 from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event of the evening, Dustin Poirier defeated Dan Hooker by unanimous decision in a “Fight of the year“Candidate, the two men having gone to war for 25 minutes (to see him). In the co-poster act, Mike Perry dominated Mickey Gall in the Welterweight action with only his girlfriend in his corner (recap here).

Biggest winner: Dustin Poirier

Poirier is back! Although he never really went anywhere after his defeat against Khabib Nurmagomedov, a champion who was never close to tasting defeat. With a huge win over Hooker, “The Diamond” returned to the winning track after suffering the aforementioned loss to “The Eagle” nine months ago at UFC 242, losing the interim title. Poirier looked as accurate as ever, but the story of the fight was his heart and courage (as well as Hooker), eating all the best shots from “The Hangman” (and vice versa) that would have dropped (and probably anyone else. Through it all, Poirier continued to fire his own deadly strikes, happily eating a few to deliver his own. And just like that, “The Diamond” reminded the rest of the top 5 lightweights that he’s still there, still dangerous and still aiming for the throne. And if you want to cross it, you will have to go through pure hell first.

Finalist: Maurice Greene

Greene won a huge, well-deserved victory in “Sin City” over Gian Villante, and he did it in fashion. After hitting two illegal shots earlier in the fight, “The Crochet Boss” found itself in a bad position in the third and final round after being dropped by a thunderous strike from Villante. A few seconds later, Greene was in survival mode, while Villante was raining on a multitude of strikes that had the referee on duty to call the fight. After surviving, though still in a bad position, it seemed like Greene was just hanging onto a breathless Villante to catch his breath. To everyone’s surprise, Greene worked slyly in a hold of submission, forcing Villante to come out of nowhere with a modified arm triangle throttle. It was a shock, indeed. The victory was also huge for Greene for other reasons, helping him break his skid in two fights and giving him a new lease on his life at the UFC.

The Biggest Loser: Philipe Lins

Two UFC fights, two defeats. This is not how Lins – the former heavyweight champion of the PFL – imagined his career start in the Octagon. He went the distance with longtime veteran Andrei Arlovski when he debuted in May 2020, but his knockout loss to Tanner Boser in the first round last night could be a break for the UFC. There is no (yet) sign that the promotion is looking to narrow its list in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, but if and when the promotion begins to do so, Lins should be nervous. The heavyweight division is not as stacked as it once was, so Lins had a chance to make his mark in a hurry, but failed to take advantage of his two opportunities.
