Tolkien written when he was in his twenties, “The Story of Kullervo,” is being published in French for the first time on Thursday, according to regional media reporting. Released by the historical French publisher Christian Bourgois, the short narrative draws inspiration from a traditional Finnish legend and serves as a foundational text for the author’s broader legendarium.
Origins in Finnish Legend
The short novel follows the unhappy fate of Kullervo, described by publisher Christian Bourgois as “surely the darkest and most tragic of all of Tolkien’s characters.” The narrative centers on an orphan endowed with supernatural powers who is sold into slavery and seeks vengeance against the wizard responsible for his fate. Tolkien explained that this early piece, conceived when he was in his twenties, formed the basis of his personal attempts to write original legends based on a Finnish story.
Connection to The Children of Húrin
The text, which saw publication in English in 2015, acts as the conceptual precursor to one of the most powerful stories in Tolkien’s mythos, “The Children of Húrin,” as noted by British specialist Verlyn Flieger in the book’s introduction. Flieger identifies the character of Túrin Turambar from the later work as the “hero most tragic of all the writer’s mythology.”
