“Great call with the Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (56) once again thanked Switzerland for its role as a mediator between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. This emerges from a communiqué on Monday and a tweet from Pompeo.
The day before, Tehran had asked the Americans “without preconditions” for a possible prisoner exchange with the United States. In a phone call to Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis, the US Secretary of State thanked “Switzerland for its constant and constructive role as a protective power of US interests in Iran,” a spokesman for American diplomacy is quoted in the media release.
In the tweet, Pompeo also spoke on Monday of “Swiss aid to return American citizens from Iran and Burma” during the coronavirus pandemic. Relations between Switzerland and the United States are better than “ever before,” wrote Pompeo.
Switzerland has represented the interests of the United States in the Islamic Republic of Iran for decades. Both sides regularly thank Switzerland for their services. (nim / SDA)
