VOA Story American History, today we continue to tell you about the era of President Franklin Roosevelt. Allied forces liberated Paris, France, from Nazi German occupation, then moved east to Belgium. Allied forces captured the huge port city of Antwerp in northern Belgium. With the Allies taking the port of Antwerp, it was easier to send supplies and fuel. Then, when the Allies tried to advance into the Netherlands, the Germans were unable to stop the Allies from advancing. US air units won battles in the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven and the eastern city of Nijmegen. However, the Nazi German army defeated the British army unit called ‘Red Devils’ after a fierce battle in Arnhem, Holland.
