Internet buyers could be hit by mandatory delivery charges as part of a campaign to reduce congestion and toxic emissions, The temperature has learned.
The government is considering a series of measures to reduce the damaging impact of the boom in e-commerce, which has resulted in an increase in delivery vans on British roads.
Ministry of Transportation science advisers report recommended “compulsory fee” similar to that imposed for plastic bags, on all Amazon-style consumer deliveries.
He said that the introduction of free and overnight delivery agreements had led to “unnecessary over-ordering”, with some people immediately returning clothes they no longer wanted free of charge. Mandatory charges may be necessary to “encourage more sustainable behavior,” said the ministers.
