An increase of 6% in household electricity and 15.9% in gas… Industry is higher

[앵커]

The government will raise city electricity and gas rates from tomorrow (1st).

For a four-person household, the combined electricity and city gas bills cost an extra 7,670 per month.

Electricity bills used by large capacity users such as corporations will rise higher than this.

Yes. The government has decided to raise electricity and city gas rates for the fourth quarter, which will come into effect tomorrow.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Choo Kyung-ho and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-yang held a briefing at the government complex in Seoul this morning and announced the policy of adjusting electricity rates and rates civilian city gas for the fourth quarter.

First of all, the average monthly electricity bill for a four-person household will rise by 2,270 won starting tomorrow.

We charge a fuel cost adjusted unit price for electricity in the fourth quarter of all users, including those for residential use, 2.5 earned per kWh.

Among them, large capacity users for industrial and general use decided to raise the price up to 11.7 won depending on the supply voltage.

Including the 4.9 won increase in the standard fuel cost originally confirmed, large capacity operators will increase to a maximum of 16.6 won per kWh.

Looking at the rate of increase, 6% since the previous month and around 18% since the beginning of the year on a household basis.

The city gas rate will also increase by 2.7 per megajoule from tomorrow (the 1st) for residential and commercial use.

The rate of increase in gas rates for houses was 15.9% compared to the previous month, double the rate of increase of 7% in July and 38% compared to the beginning of this year.

The monthly gas bill per household has increased by 5,400 won compared to the previous month, so when electricity and gas bills are combined, the monthly gas bill per household is 7,670 won more.

Why did the government decide to increase city electricity and gas rates significantly?

[기자]

Yes. The government said the increase in fuel costs would be reflected in stages, but that the increase in the fourth quarter had been adjusted to take account of high prices and low income households.

However, it is explained that electricity rates for industrial and general use such as semiconductor and steel industries have increased significantly given the carrying capacity.

The government said that KEPCO is expected to lose an astronomical 30 trillion won this year, and KOGAS also said that receivables exceeded 5 trillion won in the second quarter alone and that an increase was inevitable.

In addition, it is explained that the trade deficit is also increasing due to the surge in liquefied natural gas and LNG prices amid concerns about the global energy supply disruption this winter, so it is inevitable to reduce demand through rate increases.

However, due to the associated increase in electricity and gas rates, the burden on ordinary people and small business owners increases, and concerns are raised about the cost of the semiconductor and steel industries in the economic downturn.

So far, it has been introduced by KEPCO.
