Al Jazeera brought Shireen Abu Akhle’s case to the International Criminal Court; Against the United States
Washington: Al Jazeera went to the International Criminal Court in the case of the Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh (Shireen Abu Akleh) who was shot dead by the Israeli army.
Al Jazeera Media Network went to court demanding action against those responsible for the murder. But the US also came forward by expressing opposition to Al Jazeera’s move.
In a report presented on Tuesday, Al Jazeera asked the Hague-based ICC to investigate and prosecute those responsible for Akhle’s murder. But within hours of submitting this request to the court, the US State Department rejected Al Jazeera’s offer.
“In this case, we oppose this move. We continue our long standing objections to the ICC investigation into the Palestinian situation.
ICC should focus on its core mission. “That mission is to act as the last resort in preventing and prosecuting heinous crimes,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price said when asked by reporters about Al Jazeera’s move.
The United States has long opposed Palestinian efforts to bring Israeli abuses to international institutions, including the United Nations and the ICC.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera has submitted a petition to the International Criminal Court along with evidence. Al Jazeera’s six-month long investigation including eyewitness testimony and video footage has been submitted along with the petition.
Meanwhile, Israel had earlier confirmed that the US had announced an investigation into Abu Akhle’s death. But Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz responded that the government will not cooperate with the US investigation.
Gantz, who described the US-led investigation as a ‘mistake’, also released details of a secret investigation by the Israeli government’s Justice Department into Akhleh’s death.
The Israeli minister also said that they will not allow others (USA) to interfere in their internal investigation.
Shireen Abu Akhle was killed on May 11. Al Jazeera journalist Abu Akhlaq was shot dead while covering a military operation and raid by Israeli forces in the refugee camp in the occupied city of Jenin on the West Bank.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
Shireen was shot dead by the army while filming Israeli raids in Jenin. Another journalist Ali Samoudi was also shot.
