(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Pyeong-cheon = The number of flights between Gimpo and Haneda (Tokyo) will improve to the level before the corona crisis.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 7th that it would increase the number of round trip flights between Gimpo and Haneda from 56 times a week to 84 times a week. Gimpo-Haneda operated 84 flights per week in 2019.

Flights between Gimpo and Haneda were suspended in March 2020 due to the result of the corona, but on June 29 this year, flights resumed on a schedule of 8 times a week. Since then, the number of flights has gradually increased through more flights.

The Gimpo-Haneda route, which began operation in 2003, is considered a symbolic route for bilateral exchange between Seoul and Tokyo. Korea has Incheon and Japan has Narita Airport, but Gimpo and Haneda Airports have better access to the capital.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs explained that it held a working level meeting on international air cooperation between Korea and Japan on the same day and agreed to increase flights with the Japanese authorities to consider the growing demand for international passengers.

The total number of international flights between Korea and Japan dropped from 845 per week in January 2020 to 156 in September 2022 following the corona crisis, but is gradually improving with Japan’s visa-free entry permit in October. In the third week of last month, it improved to 65.1% of the level before the corona crisis with 550 flights a week.

Korean Air operates between Gimpo and Haneda[003490]Asiana Airlines[020560]and Japanese airlines plan to decide when to actually increase flights, taking into account passenger demand and operational readiness.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs intends to promote a casual increase in aviation considering the growing demand for international flights.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “We will also consult with Chinese aviation authorities to restore routes to China, which have been relatively slow to recover.”
