The death toll in a stampede to leave an Indonesian football match climbs to 174

The number of deaths in the conflict during the football match has risen to 174. Spectators clashed during the Indonesian league football match and there were riots. A number of people were killed in the stampede after the police used tear gas to control the conflict.

Fans clashed during Arema Malang FC’s match against Persebaya Surabaya FC in the Indonesian Premier League. The match was played at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang City, East Java Province. When Surabaya beat Arema Malang 3-2, the fans turned and clashed.

A preliminary investigation suggests that most of the deaths occurred in the stampede. Police said others died of respiratory failure. 34 people died inside the stadium and the rest died in hospital. A number of policemen were also killed in the incident. More than 200 people have been injured.
